The name Studio Sparrow honors Stanislavsky, Nemirovich Danchenko, and Chekhov’s legacy — Their first production together, after founding the Moscow Art Theater, was The Seagull. Once in a while, a truly prominent class which leaves the Moscow Art Theater School may be given the title of “Studio”. In 125 years of existence, the school has only given the title 9 times. In honor of that tradition, we chose the name Studio Sparrow. We want artists who may be overlooked to rise, create boldly, leave beauty everywhere, and always have a home to return to.
When actors leave the Moscow Art Theatre, the are referred to as “Seagulls”, Studio Sparrow honors that legacy by calling our students and graduates “Sparrows”. We are artists who have been overlooked by conventional society — yet we are always seeking to learn, to grow, to create, to leave beauty, to be resilient, and to make an impact by telling a story. We aren’t flashy, but we leave our mark. Our artists will soar boldly into the world, create fearlessly, and always have a place to return, to play, create, and grow together.
When you join the Studio Sparrow Conservatory Theatre, you are embarking on a journey of self-discovery and growth.
The Vocational Actor Training that you will receive will serve as the foundation for your career pursuits.
Please note that because this is a vocational training program it requires singular focus. It will not be possible to maintain a job while participating in this program. There are financial assistants options available and we will be happy to provide resources and discuss options with you.
We have collaborated with several different academic and theatrical entities to create a 2 year vocational actor training program. From the first day of the first year, you will be immersed in rigorous training and immediately in rehearsals. The days will be spent in class, learning from the faculty and the Residents artists, the evenings in rehearsal where you will work alongside Equity industry professionals on stage and in production.
Students will engage in curriculum that will focus on a three pronged approach - acting technique, movement, and voice/speech; and a production model that will put them immediately in professional practice. Most training programs operate with a “learn first then do” model. Studio Sparrow’s model is to lean by doing. As such, students have the opportunity to be cast in roles along side their Professional mentors from day one. And with a five show season each year and a summer festival, students will leave with a weighty resume that will set them up for success as they pursue their career.
